Keppel starts work on Tianjin site
KEPPEL Corp yesterday broke ground on a 35.4 ha site in the start-up area of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city – the first foreign developer to do so. The project is a collaboration between a Singapore consortium led by Keppel and a Chinese group led by Tianjin TEDA Investment Holding Co.
The 30 sq km city is planned as an environmentally friendly township for 350,000 residents near the northern Chinese port of Tianjin.
When completed, the four sq km start-up area will be home to 26,500 households, with the first residents expected to move in around 2011.
‘This is a significant step towards Keppel’s effort to help transform this barren piece of land into a vibrant community with an eco-friendly and sustainable live-work-play environment,’ Keppel chairman Lee Boon Yang said yesterday at a ground-breaking ceremony in Tianjin.
Keppel unit Keppel Land is the project manager.
